WHAT IS AN ANNUAL PROFECTION?
Annual profection is a traditional timing technique that hands one house of the birth chart to each year of life. The count is plain arithmetic: the year running from birth to the first birthday belongs to the 1st house, the year after it to the 2nd house, and so on through the twelfth. Once the twelfth year closes, the cycle returns to the 1st house and repeats every twelve years. The house reached in a given year is called the profected house, and it marks the part of the chart that the year is read from. A birth date is the only input the count needs.
The profection year turns on the birthday, not on 1 January, so two people born in the same calendar year can sit in different houses at the same moment. The technique comes from Hellenistic astrology and is usually run whole sign, which is why the result is a house number rather than a degree. Naming the zodiac sign that falls in that house, or the planet that rules it, is a further step and needs the full chart.

HOW THE COUNT WORKS
- The birth date fixes the day the profection year turns: each year begins on a birthday and ends on the next one.
- The number of completed years since birth is taken — the age on the day of the reading, not the age reached later in the calendar year.
- That age is divided by twelve and the remainder is kept; adding one gives the profected house, so age 0 gives the 1st house and age 11 gives the 12th.
- Running the same count for the following year shows which house the next birthday moves to.
WHY NO BIRTH TIME IS NEEDED
A profection counts whole years from a date, so the clock time of birth changes nothing: the same date returns the same profected house whether the birth was at dawn or at midnight. Birth time decides the ascendant, the house cusps and the sign each house falls in — separate readings that the birth chart calculator covers. What is my profection year?
The profection year is the twelve-month stretch that runs from one birthday to the next, together with the house of the chart assigned to it. Its number is the age reached on the last birthday divided by twelve, remainder plus one: a 29th birthday opens a 6th house year, a 30th birthday a 7th house year. Entering a birth date above returns the current house and the date the next one begins.
Do I need my birth time?
No. The profected house depends only on the birth date, because the count moves in whole years. A birth time is needed for the rest of the chart — the ascendant, the house cusps and the sign sitting in each house — but it does not change which house a given year profects to.
When does the profection year change?
On the birthday. The change is not tied to 1 January or to the solar return chart cast to the minute; in the annual count the new house takes over from the birthday itself. The result above shows the date of the next turn along with the house it moves into.
What house system do you use?
None is needed for this count. Annual profection is traditionally run whole sign, and the house number returned here is the same under any system because the houses are counted in order rather than measured from cusps.
