01 · THE BASE CHART
WHAT IS A BIRTH CHART?
A birth chart is a frozen picture of how the sky looked on a given date, at a given time, from a given place. Three pieces of data produce it: birth date, birth time and birth place.
The chart is not a list of predictions; it is a table of positions. It shows which planet sits in which sign and which house, and at what angles the planets meet each other. Interpretation begins with reading that table.
When the birth time is unknown, planetary signs are still calculated; the rising sign and the house cusps are not. Merolot does not produce an approximate rising sign in that case — what cannot be calculated is reported as not calculable.
What everyday language calls “my sign” is the sun sign, and it is only one layer of the chart. The three markers do different work:

II.A BRIEF HISTORY
From sky records to a symbolic language, in three stops.
MESOPOTAMIA · BABYLON
The oldest known sky records come from Mesopotamia, where celestial events were tracked first for the calendar and farming, then for public omens. The idea of a personal birth chart became possible around the fifth century BCE, when Babylonian astronomers divided the zodiac into twelve equal parts.
HELLENISTIC PERIOD · MIDDLE AGES
In the Hellenistic period the tradition met Greek philosophy: houses, aspects and planetary rulerships settled into an order close to the one still in use. Medieval Arabic and Persian astronomer-astrologers refined the calculation tables, and that is the route by which the tradition reached Western Europe.
17TH CENTURY · TODAY
In the seventeenth century astronomy and astrology separated: one became the science that measures the sky, the other continued as the symbolic tradition that reads it. The tropical zodiac used today, anchored to the seasons, is an inheritance of that split.

IS ASTROLOGY A SCIENCE?
No. Astrology does not meet the predictive and reproducible standards of the scientific method; controlled studies looking for a link between planetary positions and personality traits have not found a consistent effect.
That does not make the calculation side uncertain. Planetary positions are computed from astronomical data and their accuracy is measurable; what is contested is not the arithmetic but the meaning attached to it.
Merolot does not hide that distinction. Astrology is used here as a symbolic language for self-reflection: valuable as a mirror, not as an authority on medical, legal or financial decisions. When a reading lands, it is because the sentence matches a situation, not because the sky is applying pressure.
IS AI-GENERATED ASTROLOGY ACCURATE?
The accuracy of a reading is really two questions: is the calculation right, and is the narration honest? At Merolot those layers are separate — planetary positions, house cusps and aspects are produced by a deterministic engine, and the language model only narrates what has already been calculated.
In practice that means the model does not guess at the sky, invent a transit or pick a date at random. It describes the table in front of it. Where a model can go wrong is the narration itself, which is why the templates are fixed, generation is traceable, and text passes editorial review before publication.
A reading that names a planet, a degree or a retrograde is reporting engine output, not model memory. How the calculation is made, which house system is used and which steps a text passes through are written out in full on the methodology page.
Astrology is real in the sense that the sky is real: the positions it works with are physical facts, calculated to the degree and verifiable against astronomical data. The tradition of reading meaning into those positions is also real, documented and continuously practiced for more than two thousand years.
What has not been demonstrated is a mechanism. No controlled study has shown that a planet's position causes a personality trait or an event, and no serious astrologer can point to one. Treating a chart as a cause is where astrology stops being useful and starts being misleading.
The honest position is the narrow one: a birth chart is a structured set of symbols that many people find useful for reflection, self-description and timing conversations. That usefulness does not require the mechanism to exist, and claiming the mechanism does exist would require evidence that is not there.

Common misconceptions
MYTH
A birth chart predicts what will happen.
A chart is a table of positions, not a schedule of events. It describes symbolic conditions; the outcome is not written in it, and any page that claims otherwise is overreaching.
MYTH
The sun sign is the whole chart.
The sun sign is one marker among many. The moon, the rising sign, the other planets, the houses and the aspects between them all carry their own meaning, and they routinely point in different directions.
MYTH
A thirteenth sign has changed everyone's sign.
Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, which is anchored to the equinoxes rather than to the constellations. Ophiuchus is a constellation, not a tropical sign, so it does not shift the twelve divisions.
MYTH
Two people with the same sign should behave the same way.
Two charts sharing a sun sign can differ in every other placement, and a chart is not a life. Upbringing, choice and circumstance are not inputs to the calculation and are not claimed to be.
