I don't know my birth time: what can still be calculated?
Without a birth time the sun sign and the planetary signs are still calculated; the rising sign and the house cusps are not. The reason is simple: planets stay in one sign for days or years, while the rising sign changes roughly every two hours and the entire house layout is built from it. Merolot does not produce an approximate rising sign — what cannot be calculated is reported as not calculable.
WHAT IS CALCULATED WITHOUT A BIRTH TIME?
| MARKER | STATUS | NOTE |
|---|---|---|
| Sun sign | ✓ Calculated | The sun stays in one sign for about thirty days; only a birthday on a sign boundary leaves two possibilities. |
| Planetary signs | ✓ Calculated | Mercury through Pluto: a planet holds a sign for days or years and rarely changes within a single day. |
| Moon sign | ✓ Usually | The moon changes sign roughly every two and a half days; a birthday on a transition day leaves two possibilities. |
| Lunar nodes | ✓ Calculated | The nodes change sign roughly every eighteen months. |
| Rising sign | ✗ Not calculable | It changes roughly every two hours; without a time all twelve possibilities stay open. |
| House cusps | ✗ Not calculable | Houses are built from the rising sign. With no rising sign there is no 7th house sign either. |
| Planets in houses | ✗ Not calculable | Which sign a planet is in is known; which house it falls in is not. |
WHERE TO FIND YOUR BIRTH TIME IN THE US
In the United States birth time is recorded at the state level, not federally, and whether it appears on a document depends on the state and the year. Four routes, in the order most likely to work:
- The long-form birth certificate
- Most states record the hour of birth on the long-form (full image) certificate. The short form — the abstract or wallet card issued for ID purposes — usually omits it, so a certificate that shows no time is not proof that no time was recorded.
- The state vital records office
- Certified long-form copies are ordered from the vital records office of the state where the birth took place, not the state of residence. Requests generally need proof of identity and a fee, and many states also accept county-level requests.
- Hospital records
- If the birth was in a hospital, the medical records department may still hold the delivery record with the time on it. Retention periods vary by state and hospital, so it is worth asking even for older births.
- Family memory and family papers
- Baby books, birth announcements, hospital discharge papers and notes on the back of photographs often carry a time. A remembered interval — “right after the morning news” — is data too, and the next section explains what to do with it.
WHAT IF THE TIME IS ONLY APPROXIMATE?
When the known information is a range rather than an exact time, calculate both ends of that range separately: run one chart for 6:00 a.m. and another for 9:00 a.m., then compare.
If both ends return the same rising sign, the rising sign is settled for that whole interval. If they differ, the result is two candidates instead of one — which is better than a single confident wrong answer.
Narrowing a birth time backward from life events is called rectification. It requires expertise, it produces an estimate rather than a record, and Merolot does not offer it as an automatic result.
This page is a statement of limits rather than a promise: where a marker cannot be calculated, Merolot leaves the field empty and says why instead of estimating.
