I.THE CARD'S SCENE
In the Eight of Swords, a woman with her eyes covered by a dark blindfold is shown with golden cords loosely wound around her body and arm, her hands clasped in front of her. Eight bright swords rise straight from the ground around her like a gateway. At her feet, violet crystals and glowing lotus flowers lie in place of mud; behind her, beyond a still stretch of water, a golden gate and the silhouettes of mountains can be made out. Above her head, a halo of cracked golden lines rises, along with a sky-map ringed with zodiac symbols and a crescent moon shining at its peak. At first glance the scene suggests helplessness and confinement, but it actually depicts a deep state of mind. The cords around the woman are, in truth, loose enough for her to undo by her own effort. The card stands for the invisible prison a person weaves out of their own thoughts, fears, and limiting beliefs.
II.UPRIGHT AND REVERSED
In the upright position, the Eight of Swords highlights a feeling of being trapped by circumstances or limiting beliefs. It suggests you may be overthinking a situation, creating a mental prison.
