THE CARD'S SCENE

At the arched entrance of a Gothic temple, a figure with horn-shaped ornaments on their head and a single star gleaming on their forehead meets our gaze. Before them stand a woman and a man, wrists bound together by a golden chain; aside from the cloth draped over their shoulders, their bodies are bare. The Devil represents an excessive attachment to the physical world, and the prisons we build for ourselves. Look closely and the chain hangs loosely around their wrists, showing that this bond could easily be undone. The card symbolizes the soul's trial with materialism and the courage it takes to face our own shadow side, an important stop on the road to freedom.

UPRIGHT AND REVERSED

UPRIGHT

When upright, The Devil highlights areas where you feel restricted or beholden to unhealthy habits. It serves as a powerful wake-up call to examine your attachments to the material world or limiting beliefs. This is an invitation to reclaim your personal power by acknowledging the chains you have allowed to be placed around you. In reverse, The Devil signals a period of profound liberation and the breaking of old cycles. This is a time of significant personal growth and the shedding of outdated skins.

SYMBOLISM

The crossed triangle above the figure's head, and the darkened moon, symbolize the soul held captive by matter; the sign of Capricorn on their chest emphasizes the earthly nature of that captivity. The hand touching the chin points to a thoughtful, questioning stance. The chain at the wrists is a symbol of the attachments we maintain by our own free will; its looseness is a reminder that a way out is always possible. The loose cloth draped over the shoulders depicts a state of half-surrender to worldly ties. The masks and roses in the lower corners symbolize the identity-concealing face of desire.
